Half Nelson
(7.5/10)
I had wanted to see this movie far before Ryan Gosling's oscar nomination but what I didn't know was that this movie had very little to do with teaching inner-city kids. Kids that were far more together than their druggy teacher (Gosling). This is a poetic journey between two unlikely characters. Drey (Amazingly played by new comer Shareeka Epps) mistakenly stumbles upon her history teacher one day in the locker room and see's him smoking crack. For the rest of the movie Dan is trying to sway thirteen year old Drey from involving herself with drug dealing. But the questions the movie poses are- how are these two going to come out of this? Is Drey a higher person because shes just dealing and not doing it? Is Dan hypocritcal for being hooked yet trying to get her off the streets? The resolution is not straight forward by any means...but if you look closely.. enough clues are there to see what could be the ending we all would hope and want for these two. A definite slow burn ...but worth watching if only for some great performances and yes another movie about what drug abuse can do.
