I have to say this- after The Departed pretty much scared the crap out of the studios- any other oscar contender lost several chances. I'm not only talking of Babel, Children of men...etc but Little Children for instance- a remarkable film- has lost all chances of being a front contender at this years awards. The marketing on this film has been awful(save for one of the best trailers ive ever seen) , shame on new line for letting this one go....theres still hope for acting nominations for Kate Winslet and Jackie Earl Haley. I suggest anyone who liked AMERICAN BEAUTY to check this one out. A disturbing and beautiful picture that deserves to be seen.
Pan's Labyrinth, another amazing foriegn film this year. Though the hype may mislead some people- this movie is not all fantasy and is mainly a hardcore war drama seen through the eyes of a young girl. Guillermo Del Toro(Blade 2) does a brilliant job of distinguishing fantasy/reality. Some may object to this, saying the ending is left to interpretation but to each his own because regardless of how we view what plays out on screen, nothing can deny the unforgettable climax. One of the most original and yes, terrifying movies i've seen in a long time! I'd be happy to see this film or VOLVER take home best foreign film this year.
But that's what in a way brings these seemingly different films together. They both manage to be dark and gut-wrenching but beautiful and filled with humanity at the same time. I've had to travel to pain in the ass D.C to see both of these but they should be finding their way to more theatres soon and I'd suggest seeing them.
